In this new world of luxury, we often find ourselves seeking extra comfort to suit our lifestyles. From the extra softness of the mattress topper on our beds, to the alluring scents in our homes. Everyone is adding a little more taste of luxury and comfort to their lives, we are paying for improvements, hence our bedroom isn’t an exception, we seek true luxury even for our bed linens.
It is important to know that flat and fitted sheets were traditionally used to make a proper bed, also to protect the mattress and make a smooth surface for lying. Though they are both bedlinens with almost the same characteristics they differ in their purpose. You sleep over the fitted sheet but under the flat sheet. The flat sheet is used as both the insulating and protective layer between your body and the rest of the covers on top of you i.e. blankets, bedspreads, comforters, or duvet and duvet cover. It also protects the blanket or the comforter from getting dirty. However, when you wish to choose between the flat and the fitted, here are a few things to note:
THE FLAT SHEET
The flat sheet, also called the top sheet, originally is placed between the sleeper and the blanket. It is a non-elasticized/loose bedding cover that is hemmed an inch or half an inch round and will fit the dimensions of the mattress.
⁃ Flat Sheets are easy to spread on
⁃ Can fit smaller bed so it can serve more than one bed
⁃ Easy to iron and fold
Cons:
⁃ Flat sheets tend to hang loosely if not properly tucked it
⁃ Tends not to stay in place
⁃ Takes a little more time to dress
⁃ Not ideal for children bed
THE FITTED SHEET
Fitted Sheet is the bedding cover that is made to fit your exact mattress by taking its shape and snug unto it with elastic on the corners or round the edges. The elastic band holds them firmly in right place. Their function is to cover the mattress, protect the mattress and ensure smooth, soft surface for the sleeping person to lie on. When purchasing fitted sheets, it is important to have the right dimensions of a mattress – the length, the width and the thickness. As fitted sheets must pull snugly over the mattress and not be easily pulled off, the right dimensions matter a lot. The wrong size fitted sheet simply will not be able to go neatly round the corners and will not stay in place.
Pros:
⁃ Once fitted right, stays in place
⁃ Easy to dress up in the morning
⁃ Easily serves as a top sheet to keep pads and toppers in place because it is fitted
⁃ Gives the bed a crisp look after dressing
⁃ Best for kids’ bed and people on the move.
Cons:
⁃ Can only fit the mattress it is made for
⁃ Can be a little difficult to get on the mattress but gets easier with practice
⁃ A bit tricky to iron and fold
